How Much Should a Child Memorise in a Day?

How much Quran should a child memorise each day?

The right daily portion is the largest amount a child can still recite correctly seven days later, not the largest amount they can recite correctly today. For most children starting hifz that is a few lines, and it is far less than families expect.

The seven-day test

Set a portion. A week later, ask for it cold, with no warm-up and no prompting. If it comes back clean, the portion was right. If it comes back patchy, the portion was too big -- regardless of how well it went on the day it was learnt.

Most families discover their child's real number is smaller than the one they were using. That is not a setback. A smaller portion that holds is faster than a larger one that has to be relearnt three times.

Why more is usually slower

Memorising is cheap, revision is not
Learning a new page takes one sitting. Keeping it takes a visit every few days for months. Double the daily portion and you have doubled a cost that never ends, not one that ends tomorrow.
The backlog compounds
A child who is slightly behind on revision falls further behind every single day, because tomorrow adds more to revise. This is the mechanism behind almost every abandoned hifz.
Confidence is part of the method
A child who recites cleanly most days keeps going. A child who is corrected constantly concludes they are bad at it, and they are usually just overloaded.

What to do when revision is slipping

  • Stop new memorisation. Completely, for a week or two. This is the right move and it feels like going backwards.
  • Revise only. Clear the backlog before adding to it.
  • Restart at half the previous portion.
  • Keep the daily time the same length -- it is the content that changes, not the habit.

A teacher who will not pause new memorisation when revision is failing is managing a schedule rather than a child. Ask for the pause. Any good hifz teacher will already have suggested it.
