What we have learned teaching children since 2019. One question per article, answered in the first paragraph.
Three things motivate children here, in this order: being good at it, being seen doing it by people they love, and a routine so ordinary that it is not a daily decision. Rewards work for a few weeks and then become the price of reading, which is worse than where you started.
Read the full answerShorten the lesson before you do anything else. Thirty minutes of half-attention is worse than fifteen minutes of full attention, and a restless child is usually a child in a lesson that is longer than their concentration, at the wrong hour, in the wrong chair.
Read the full answerStart with the ones attached to something the child already does every day: eating, sleeping, waking, leaving the house, entering the bathroom. A dua tied to an action is remembered; a dua learnt from a list is recited once and forgotten by Thursday.
Read the full answerMemorisation fades unless it is used. The routine that works is small and boring: everything learnt in the last month gets revised every week, and everything older gets revised in a rotation, a little every day. Ten minutes daily protects more than an hour on Sunday.
Read the full answerA laptop or tablet, headphones with a microphone, a table, and a corner of the house where nobody walks past. That is the whole list. The two things that quietly ruin lessons are a phone propped against a cushion and a child sitting on a bed.

Track three things instead: whether your child can read something unseen, whether the same mistakes are still being corrected, and what stage the teacher says they are on. A month of no new pages can be real progress; a month of new pages can be none.

A child is ready when they can read a line they have never seen before, unaided, at a steady pace, with the vowel marks and the basic rules applied without being reminded. If any of those needs prompting, another few weeks of Qaida costs far less than two years of guessing.

For most school-age children that is straight after school with a snack first, or a weekend morning. The worst is late evening after homework, and that is the slot most families choose by default.

It teaches the Arabic letters, their sounds, how they join, and the vowel marks, in an order built so each page uses only what the last one taught. A child who skips it can often read words, but reads them the way they guessed them.

Two days a week suits a young child starting out or a family testing the water; a child in Qaida or in Hifz should be at four or five if the week allows it.

Use them to add days rather than hours: five short lessons a week in July will move a child further than any term-time month, and it costs the family less effort than term time does.

Watch how much of the lesson your child spends reading out loud, whether mistakes are corrected in the moment, and whether the teacher finds out what your child already knows. Then ask about the same teacher, the same slot, the fee in writing, and what happens if you stop.

A child who is taught in a language they are still translating in their head learns the Quran more slowly, not faster. The reading is Arabic either way; only the explanation changes, and here it can be in English, in Urdu, or in both.

The usual causes are a slot that lands when the child is exhausted, a teacher who moves too fast or too slow, or a child who is embarrassed because they cannot keep up. Change the hour first, the pace second, the teacher third, and do not make the Quran the thing a child is punished over.
Read the full answerDo not stop, reduce. A child who drops from five days to two keeps the reading warm and comes back in a week. A child who stops for two months comes back needing several weeks of revision before any new work starts, and that is a worse trade than the two hours a week the lessons were taking.
Read the full answerFor reading, one to one wins, because Tajweed is corrected sound by sound and a child in a group of eight reads out loud for a few minutes at most. What a group gives that one to one cannot is company, and that is worth keeping through a weekend class or a masjid circle rather than through the daily lesson.

A weekday one-to-one lesson moves the reading along, because the child reads for the whole lesson instead of a few minutes of it. Many families keep both, and that is usually the right answer.

An academy that answers all four in writing is a different proposition from one that answers none of them.

What decides it is how many days a week your child attends, what age they start, and how many lessons get missed. A child doing five days a week finishes far sooner than one doing two, and that difference is larger than any difference between teachers.

Younger children and most girls settle faster with a female teacher; some boys of ten and above work better with a male teacher they see as a teacher rather than a second parent. Either way, you choose, and you can change after the trial classes without explaining yourself.
