How to Teach Namaz to Kids, Step by Step

Start before they can say any of it

The first lesson in prayer is watching. A four- or five-year-old who stands beside a parent, copies the bowing and the prostration, and gets up when everyone gets up is already learning the most important part: that prayer is something the family does, at set times, every day.

Do not correct a young child's copying too much. The words and the details come later. What you are building at this age is the habit and the feeling.

The steps, in order

   1. Wudu

   Teach it as a routine, the same order every time, with you doing it alongside them. Children remember a sequence they have done fifty times.

   2. The positions

   Standing, bowing, rising, prostrating, sitting. Practise them without words first so the body knows the order.

   3. Al-Fatihah

   The one surah recited in every unit of prayer. Correct reading matters here, so it helps if a teacher checks it.

   4. A short surah

   Al-Ikhlas or Al-Kawthar are common first choices.

   5. The words in each position

   Takbir, what is said in bowing and prostration, and the tashahhud, one at a time.

   6. One full prayer, then five

   Start with one prayer a day that the child does completely, then build up.

What age?

The Prophet ﷺ told parents to teach their children to pray at seven, and to be firmer about it at ten. Most families find it easiest to start the gentle version — praying alongside, learning the positions — well before seven, so that by seven the child already knows what to do and only the regularity is new.

Keeping it going

• Pray together where you can. A child praying alone in their room is much more likely to skip it.
• Tie prayers to things that already happen: Fajr before breakfast, Maghrib before dinner.
• Praise the effort, not the perfection. A child told off for a wrong word will start avoiding prayer.
• Let them lead the family occasionally once they know the words. Children love the responsibility.
• Be patient with the school-day prayers. Dhuhr and Asr during term time are genuinely harder for children in the UK and America.
