The Best Time of Day for a Child's Quran Lesson

What time of day should my child have their Quran lesson?

The best slot is the one where your child is rested and nothing is waiting behind it. For most school-age children that is straight after school with a snack first, or a weekend morning. The worst is late evening after homework, and that is the slot most families choose by default.

Why the hour beats the teacher

A tired child learns slowly whoever is teaching them. Parents change teacher after a bad month far more often than they change the time, and the time is usually what was wrong.

Watch your own child for a week and you will know their good hour. It is the one where they can sit and build something without being asked twice.

Slot by slot

Before school
Excellent if your household is calm in the morning, unworkable if it is not. Fifteen focused minutes here beat forty at night.
Straight after school
The most popular slot for a reason. Give them a snack and twenty minutes first -- a child who walks in and sits down to Quran resents both.
Before Maghrib
Good. The day is not over, and the lesson is not the last thing standing between them and bed.
After dinner
Workable for teenagers, poor for under-tens.
Late evening
The most common and the least effective. This is where refusals come from.
Weekend morning
The best slot most families never try, and the easiest one to get.

Keeping the slot

  • Take the same time every week. A child who knows when the lesson is argues about it less.
  • Tell the teacher which hours are impossible rather than accepting what is offered.
  • If the slot stops working as the child gets older, change it rather than pushing through.
  • Time zones are not the obstacle they look like. Ask before assuming your hour is unavailable.
