A child who has lost interest in Quran class is usually not bored -- they are stuck, tired, or being corrected more than they are being told they are doing well. Fix the cause before trying to fix the enthusiasm, because rewards do not help a child who cannot read the page.
Find the cause first
- Stuck
- The commonest one. The child hit the joins, or a Tajweed rule, and has quietly been guessing since. Looks exactly like boredom. Fixed by going back, not forward.
- Tired
- A lesson at the end of a full school day, with homework still waiting. Nothing is wrong with the lesson -- the slot is wrong.
- Corrected too much
- If almost every sentence a child hears is a correction, they conclude they are bad at it. Good teachers correct less and praise the specific thing that improved.
- No sense of progress
- Children measure in finished things. A child who cannot point to anything they can now do that they could not do in June will lose interest, however well it is going.
Six things that work
- Move the slot before you change anything else. Morning, or straight after school, or the weekend. It fixes more cases than any other single change.
- Shorten the lesson. Twenty focused minutes beat forty endured ones, and it is better to end early than to end badly.
- Make progress visible. A page they read a month ago, read again today, out loud. The difference is obvious to the child.
- Let them hear a reciter they like. Interest in the sound comes before interest in the work.
- Ask the teacher to tell the child one specific thing that got better this week. Specific, not general.
- Take a planned week off rather than an unplanned slide into stopping. A break you chose is not the same as quitting.
What usually does not work
Paying for completed pages. It works for a few weeks and then the price goes up, and it replaces the reason you wanted them to learn in the first place.
Adding lessons. A child who dislikes three lessons a week will not like five. If anything, the opposite move is the right one.
Switching academy at the first bad month. Sometimes the teacher is genuinely wrong for the child and a change is right. But a child who is stuck will be stuck in the next academy too, and the clock starts again.
