Two lessons a week is the floor at which a child stops spending the first ten minutes remembering. Three to four is where most children make steady progress. Five is rarely twice as good as three, and for a young child it is often worse.
What each number actually gives you
- One a week
- Enough to keep a child in touch with the Quran, not enough to teach them to read. Six days between lessons means re-covering old ground every time. Honest about what it is, and better than nothing.
- Two a week
- The floor for real progress. Three days apart is short enough that the previous lesson is still there. Most families who are starting out should start here.
- Three to four a week
- Where most of our students sit. The gap is small enough that momentum carries, and the week still has room in it for everything else.
- Five a week
- Right for hifz, and for an older child working to a deadline. For a seven-year-old learning the Qaida it usually produces fatigue rather than speed.
Why more is not linear
Learning to read is limited by how much practice a child can absorb, not by how much instruction they are given. Past a point, extra lessons add instruction without adding absorption, and the child gets tired instead of faster.
The family's stamina matters too. Five lessons a week is five slots to protect, five evenings that cannot move. Families who choose five often end up at three within a term -- and the drop feels like failure, which it is not.
If the budget only allows two
- Space them out. Monday and Thursday beats Monday and Tuesday by a wide margin.
- Use the five-minute rule on one day in between. A parent listening, nothing more.
- Keep the two slots sacred rather than adding a third you will not keep.
- Tell the teacher it is two a week so the pace is set for two, not for four.
Two protected lessons a week for three years will take a child further than four lessons a week for six months. Consistency is the variable that actually decides this, and it is the one nobody sells.
