Keeping the Quran Going Through the School Holidays

Should my child keep taking Quran classes during the school holidays?

The holidays are the best weeks of the year for reading, because the child is rested and the clock is empty. Use them to add days rather than hours: five short lessons a week in July will move a child further than any term-time month, and it costs the family less effort than term time does.

Why holiday weeks are worth more

In term time the lesson competes with homework, tiredness and a bedtime. In the holidays it competes with nothing, so the child arrives able to concentrate and leaves without a second task waiting.

Morning slots open up too, and a ten o'clock lesson with a fresh child is worth two at seven in the evening with a tired one.

A holiday plan that is not a second school

Days
Five short ones, not three long ones.
Length
Thirty minutes. Resist making it an hour because the day is free.
Time
Morning, before the day fills up.
Goal
One visible milestone for the holidays — finishing a Qaida stage, or three short surahs — rather than “as much as possible”.

If you are travelling

  • Tell the teacher the dates before you go, not after you have missed two lessons.
  • Time zones are workable — the slot moves for the trip and moves back afterwards.
  • If you pause entirely, the unused balance carries over to the next month here rather than being lost.
  • Two lessons a week while travelling keeps the habit alive and is far better than a clean stop.
