Male or Female Quran Teacher: Which Is Right for Your Child?

What actually changes, and what does not

The teaching does not change. The same Qaida, the same Tajweed rules, the same corrections. What changes is how quickly a particular child relaxes, and a child who is relaxed reads out loud instead of whispering.

Families choose for their own reasons and we do not ask for them. Some households prefer a female teacher for a daughter as a matter of course. Some fathers want a male teacher for a son who is memorising. Both are ordinary requests here.

How to decide before you have met anyone

• Under seven: most children do better with a female teacher, simply because the voice and the patience feel like school rather than an exam.
• Girls of any age: ask for a female teacher unless your daughter says otherwise.
• Boys of ten and above, especially in Hifz: a male teacher often holds the line better on daily revision.
• A shy child: ask for the teacher who is described as gentle rather than the one described as strict, whichever gender that is.

If you are unsure, take the trial classes with one and say plainly afterwards that you would like to try the other. Nobody is offended. It is a class, not a marriage.

What to ask before the first lesson

• Is a supervisor present in every lesson? Here, yes, and all of our supervisors are women.
• Can I sit in without arranging it? Here, yes, because every lesson runs on one link that does not change.
• Will my child have the same teacher every week, or whoever is free?
• If we ask to change teacher, what happens to the fee and to the schedule?
