A child needs four things at home for online Quran classes: a screen big enough to read Arabic on, headphones, a quiet corner with a door, and the same slot every week. A laptop or tablet is better than a phone. Everything else is optional.
The four that matter
- A screen you can read Arabic on
- A tablet or a laptop. A phone works and plenty of families start there, but Arabic on a phone screen is small, and a child who is squinting is a child who is guessing.
- Headphones
- The single cheapest improvement available. They cut the room out, they stop the teacher's voice echoing back, and a child who can hear every letter clearly stops mixing up the ones that sound alike.
- A corner with a door
- Not a study. A corner of a room where the door can be shut for half an hour. A child reciting in the middle of a family room will read at half their ability and nobody will know why.
- The same time every week
- This is the one that decides whether lessons last. A fixed slot becomes a habit in about three weeks. A slot that moves around never does.
What makes less difference than people expect
- Internet speed. A video call needs far less than a parent imagines. If video calls to family work, Quran lessons will work.
- A printer. Pages can be read on screen. We send them anyway, but nobody needs to print a Qaida.
- A desk. A table and a chair where the child sits up is enough. Reading lying on a bed is the problem, not the absence of a desk.
- An expensive microphone. The one in the laptop is fine. The headphones are what people actually notice.
The thing nobody lists
A parent within earshot for the first few weeks. Not sitting in -- within earshot. Young children behave differently on a video call when they know an adult might walk past, and the teacher gets a far more accurate picture of where the child actually is.
After a month it stops mattering. In the first month it is worth more than any piece of equipment on this page.
How the lesson itself runs
- One Google Meet link that never changes. Save it once and it is the same link in a year.
- One teacher, the same every week, at the same time.
- A supervisor is on every class, and all our supervisors are women.
- You can join any lesson without arranging it first. The link is the same one your child uses.
