Age is the wrong test. A child is ready for online Quran classes when they can sit with one adult for fifteen minutes, repeat a sound back accurately, and be corrected without the lesson ending in tears. Some children can do all three at four and a half. Some cannot at seven.
The three signs of ready
- Fifteen minutes with one adult
- Not an hour, and not in a classroom. Can they sit with one person and stay with one activity for a quarter of an hour? That is the length of a young child's first lessons here.
- Repeating a sound back
- You say a word, they say it back, and it is close. This is the whole mechanism of early Quran learning. A child who is not yet doing this in their own language is not ready to do it in Arabic.
- Being corrected
- Can they be told they said it wrong, and try again, without the session collapsing? This is the one that decides it, and it has nothing to do with intelligence.
The signs to wait
- A screen is still a fight. If every video call ends in a struggle, Quran lessons will not be the exception.
- The idea came entirely from a grandparent and the parent is unconvinced. Lessons need one adult at home who wants them.
- The child has just started school and is exhausted by four o'clock. Wait a term.
Waiting three months costs almost nothing. A bad first experience at five can put a child off for years, and that is a real cost.
What a lesson with a four or five year old looks like
- Fifteen to twenty minutes, not thirty.
- Two or three letters, repeated, with the illustrated Qaida on screen.
- The teacher does most of the talking at first. The child joins in when they are ready.
- A parent nearby for the first weeks -- not sitting in, within earshot.
- Ending early on a bad day, deliberately, rather than pushing through.
We teach children only, from four and a half to seventeen. That is not a marketing line -- a teacher who spends every lesson with children teaches a five-year-old differently from one who mostly teaches adults.
