Starting Quran at Four: What Is Realistic

Can a four year old start online Quran classes?

Yes, from about four and a half, with two conditions: the lesson is short and the goal is the ear, not the page. At this age a child learns letters by hearing and repeating them. Fifteen to twenty useful minutes inside a thirty-minute lesson is a good day, and that is enough.

What a four year old can do

  • Copy a sound they have just heard, over and over, without being bored by it.
  • Recognise letters by shape, the way they recognise a logo, before they can name them.
  • Sit still for about as many minutes as their age, and then not.
  • Learn faster from a teacher who smiles than from one who is strict. This is not a small point at four.

What the first month looks like

A handful of letters. Not a page, not a row. The teacher says the letter, the child repeats, and that is most of the lesson. Some days will produce nothing at all, and the next day the same child will name six letters in a row.

Parents who expect a page a week at this age end up changing teacher every two months looking for the one who moves faster. There is no such teacher. There is only a four year old.

Making it work

  • Pick a slot when the child is fresh -- after a nap or after breakfast, not at seven in the evening.
  • Sit nearby for the first weeks, close enough to be seen, far enough not to answer for them.
  • Let the teacher end early on a bad day. A lesson that ends while the child is still happy is what makes them come back tomorrow.
  • Three days a week is fine at this age. Five short ones are better if the child enjoys them.
