Switching Quran Academy Without Losing Your Child's Progress

How do I switch my child to a different Quran academy?

The short answer

Before you leave, write down exactly where your child is: which book, which page, which surah, and what the last teacher was correcting. Then trial the new academy while the old one is still running. Switching cold, with no handover note, is what costs families a month of repeated assessment.

The mistake that costs a month

Most families stop the old academy first and start looking afterwards. The new teacher then has no idea where the child is, so the first two or three lessons become an assessment. The child, who has already read those pages, reads them again and concludes that they have gone backwards.

Overlapping by two weeks avoids all of it. Free trial classes exist for exactly this, and there is no rule that says you must have left somewhere before you try somewhere else.

Write this down before you go

  • The book and the exact page number, or the surah and the ayah.
  • What the last teacher kept correcting -- a letter, a madd, a habit of rushing.
  • Which days and times worked, and which ones your child was tired for.
  • Anything the child found hard to say out loud in front of a teacher.

Four lines. Send them to the new teacher before the first lesson and the first lesson is a lesson.

What to check on the way out

  • Notice period. Some academies want a month, some want none.
  • Whether they hold a card, and whether stopping lessons stops the charge.
  • Any fee already paid for lessons not yet taken.
  • Whether the materials were yours or theirs.

Ask in writing, on WhatsApp or email, so the answer exists. Most academies are straightforward about this. The ones that are not are the reason you are leaving.

What a first month somewhere new should look like

Lesson one
Reading from the page you named, not from the beginning
Week one
The teacher tells you what they have found, good and bad
Weeks two to four
Same teacher, same time, no reshuffling
End of month one
You can name what improved

Here the trial classes are free, up to three of them, and no card is taken at signup, so an overlap costs nothing.

Will my child have to start again at a new academy?

No. A teacher listens to the child read in the free trial class and begins where they actually are, which is usually further on than a parent fears and occasionally a little further back than the last academy claimed.

What should I ask before moving?

Whether the lesson is genuinely one to one, whether the fee is published before anyone asks for a phone number, whether it will be the same teacher every week, whether a second adult is on the call, and what happens to a missed lesson.

Is there a notice period or a contract here?

No contract, no minimum term and no registration fee. Fees are monthly and paid for the month ahead.

Can we try before leaving our current academy?

Yes, and most families do. Up to three free trial classes, with no card taken, so the two can run alongside each other for a week.

What if we do not get on with the new teacher?

Ask for a different one in the family group. No reason is needed and none will be asked for.

How do we keep the progress record from the old academy?

Tell the teacher in the trial class what your child covered and where they stopped. The teacher will still check by listening, but it saves time knowing where to start.
