Children across Canada learn the Quran one to one over video with the same qualified teacher every week, explained in English or Urdu rather than Arabic. Lessons sit after school on your own time zone, whether that is Toronto or Vancouver, fees are published in Canadian dollars from CA$54 a month, and every family starts with up to three free classes.
The problem is the drive, not the will
In the Greater Toronto Area a family usually has a masjid class within reach. Outside it, in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg or any of the smaller cities, the nearest Quran class is often a thirty or forty minute drive, and that drive has to happen twice, in the dark, through a Canadian winter.
What follows is the same story we are told every year. Lessons start in September, thin out through November, and stop by February. Nobody decided to stop. The journey decided.
Five and a half time zones, one answer
- Toronto and Montreal
- A 4pm or 5pm slot on Eastern time is the most common one we run.
- Calgary and Edmonton
- Mountain time, two hours behind Toronto. Same arrangement, shifted.
- Vancouver
- Pacific time. These slots are covered by teachers who work those hours deliberately.
- Weekends
- Saturday and Sunday mornings on your own local time, for families who keep weekdays clear.
Your child keeps the same slot and the same teacher every week. When the clocks change in March and November the slot moves with you, not against you.
One lesson a week is not enough for a child starting from the first Arabic letter. Three short ones beat one long one, because what is being built is a memory of sound and sound fades faster than a week.
Taught in a language your child already speaks
- Explanation in English, which almost every child schooled in Canada reads comfortably.
- Explanation in Urdu, where that is the language spoken at home.
- The recitation itself in Arabic, as it has to be.
- No French is needed from the teacher, and none is used in the lesson.
Say which you want before the trial rather than after it. Changing the language of explanation means changing teacher, and that is better done before your child has settled with one.
What a month costs in Canadian dollars
- 2 days a week
- 8 lessons of 30 minutes — CA$54 a month
- 3 days a week
- 12 lessons of 30 minutes — CA$68 a month
- 4 days a week
- 16 lessons of 30 minutes — CA$76 a month
- 5 days a week
- 20 lessons of 30 minutes — CA$82 a month
Charged in Canadian dollars. No registration fee, no contract and no minimum term, and no card is taken for the trial classes.
Forty-five minute and one hour lessons are available for Hifz and for older children. Ask for one when you book rather than after, so the teacher assigned is the right one.
What a parent sees from the outside
- A supervisor from the academy on every call, not only the teacher and your child.
- A family group where the teacher writes what was covered and what to revise.
- Permission to sit in on any lesson, unannounced.
- A named teacher before you pay anything, and the right to ask for a different one.
- Up to three free trial classes, with no card taken.
Ask any academy for these five in writing before enrolling. What comes back, and how quickly, tells you more than the website does.
